Hope and Conservatism

What Christian conservatives say about the current political landscape and society. “All of our good and righteous morals are being attacked, society grows ever more evil, tyranny is growing stronger and religious freedom is hanging by a thread. It’s time to get the wagons and circle the capital, kick everyone out of congress and elect new leaders.”
What many others are thinking and what they sound like when they such comments. “All of our good and righteous morals are being attacked, society grows ever more evil, tyranny is growing stronger and religious freedom is hanging by a thread. It’s time to retreat back to the Alamo and defend ourselves. Let the thousands of evil doers come, we can out last them.”
Of course, there are also many that would say the same things about society and politics, but would use these things as the reason why the word of God must be spread. I understand how people come to all three views. Some people feel that their liberties are under attack and the blame is with Washington. Other people do not want to face the issues they fear, so they try and hide from them. In my opinion, the first two views are flawed. If all the representatives were ousted and new elections were held. People with the same ideals and political views that occupy congress now would be elected again because we live in a democracy and because of the two party system. Moreover, the majority of people will always choose the lesser of two evils and not vote their conscience. But, these are not the main reasons why the two views are flawed. It is the philosophical implications behind the two thoughts. Philosophically, wanting to use drastic measures to clean up a societies problems or wanting to hide from societies problems are stemmed from the conservative point of view. And quite frankly neither view is Christian. Neither view contains hope. Both stances see society as a world falling apart. There are several statistics that show otherwise. Never the less, there are of course plenty of things in the world that need to be fixed. Does Christianity have an answer for these problems? From the perspective of the Christian, yes it does. In fact, Christianity offers much hope for several things that are vexing the world. So why are so many Christian conservative wanting to do the first two courses of actions and not the third? Conservatism! Christianity is scripturally fairly liberal and believers are unquestionably commanded to liberally share the message. I do not wish to imply that if you are a Christian, you should not be a conservative. I am simply saying, don’t let conservatism stifle the liberal, hopeful gospel and don’t let it place a doubtful outlook on society in your mind. Follow the gospel teachings, “love your neighbor as thy self.” And remember it is what you DO that defines you.
